The Great Gig in The Sky

Sad news to hear today that Jimi Hendrix Experience drumming pioneer extraordinairre Mitch Mitchell has passed away.

{The 61-year-old was discovered in the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon, in the early hours of Wednesday.

A medical examiner told the Associated Press news agency that his death appeared to be from natural causes, but said there would be an autopsy.

Hendrix died in 1970 and the band’s bassist Noel Redding died in 2003.} (from bbc)

Mitchell was an integral part of The Experience sound, and a groundbreaking musician.  He, along with Ginger Baker and others, brought a fusion of Jazz and Rock traditions together in a unique way that helped to shape the soundscape of the 60’s.

Presumably, the band is back together now, so I guess they can get on with the Jazz project Jimi wanted to do and take it from there.

Also worth mentioning is the sad passing of Pink Floyd’s keyboards man Rick Wright a few months ago, whose contribution to their sound is also defining musicianship.

Rick was described by all who knew him as a wonderfully gentle soul, and his nuanced playing across the spectrum of Floyd recordings would certainly convey this.  He will be sorely missed by Floyd fans the world over, and his passing puts the final nail in the coffin for all talk of a Floyd reunion.

Getting back to the Great Gig in the skies theory, we now have, as I see it, a reunited Hendrix Experience, (though I see Jimi firing Noel Redding again) with Rick wright on Keys.

It looks promising.   Especially when we add the also recently departed Issac Hayes as guest Vocalist, it is shaping up to be quite a showstopper.

Goodbye for now Mitch et al, and I’ll see you all on the other side.  Happy jamming.
